How do you write what people actually want to read?
I’ve always written for me. In the early days of my adolescence, I wrote a ton of fanfictions (like your typical nerd). These days, diving into smuttier writing, I still focus on stuff I like! If other people like it, then they’ll find it.
But as an indie author in a market consisting of folks competing with people pumping out AI bullcrap, I’ve been trying to do more research. I see what’s popular in romance these days: slow burns, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, fantasy, and morally gray character. Fortunately, I also love most of these things.
Ultimately, I write too slow to get to half my ideas. Writers curse.
